Winchester Slide-Action Rifles - Volumes I & II

The .22 that made shooting fun
With the closing of the American frontier in the latter years of the 19th Century, American shooters found themselves turning to guns for recreation and entertainment rather than as tools of survival. Winchester identified this need and created a rifle that a man - or a boy - could shoot for fun: The Model 1890. Winchester's first slide-action rifle, the Model 1890 was a high-quality gun that proved extremely popular with the shooting public. It was a great tool for small game hunting and plinking and it helped young boys all across America keep alive the dream of the Wild West. This comprehensive volume - previously released as two separate editions - chronicles more than seventy years of history of Winchester's four classic slide-action rifles: The aforementioned Model 1890, plus the successor models 1906, 61 and 62. More than two million of these rifles had been sold when production ceased in 1963 and the story of how they were developed, manufactured and marketed is a fascinating one. The result of painstaking research, this volume chronicles every aspect of Winchester's slide action .22s, from the technical details of actions, barrel, stocks and other components to the packaging and marketing materials that effectively kept them in the public's mind. Packed with interesting facts and figures, this book is every collector's must-have resource for production quantities, dates of manufacturer, serial numbers, and other pertinent data. Everyone who has ever loved a .22 rifle will treasure this very American story.
