The gas war in World War I. Gas protection in the armies of the German Empire, Austria-Hungary and Italy

Many b & w and color photos, large format. 504 pages, Englisch

In recent years there has been a growing interest in the study of gas protection equipment supplied to the warring armies. This volume, which is extensively illustrated with photos of more than 200 original copies that are kept in private collections or museums, aims to show the most important gas protection agents used by the imperial armies of Germany and Austria-Hungary during the First World War as well as were used by the army of the Kingdom of Italy.

This publication shows the development over time, from the first breathing apparatus borrowed from the sanitary sector to the highly developed protective masks with filters and the corresponding containers and protective clothing against bubble-forming gases. The numerous official documents produced during the war are accompanied by a number of important original photos from the period, which testify to the extensive use of gas protection devices in the trenches of the First World War.
The book also includes a historical overview of poison gas research in the three countries, notes on the industries involved in production, and a chapter devoted to the main types of poison gases.
